White and Orange and a mini Book Review

Acupuncture was a success yesterday, felt better for a bit, still did ice, and this morning not so stiff. So another appointment tomorrow, and I think I need to start working on a maintenance plan for my back.

Photography related, In my static state I read Digital Food Photography by Lou Manna and it was just what I was looking for in food photography tips. Its actually written in such a way that if you had never done photography before, this is what you have to do to get outstanding digital food images. It covers it all, from the camera, its settings, working with the client, and food stylists, and composition, LIGHTING, retouching, and finishes with some really good tips on how to get business. The book was chock full of basic stuff, but the real meat (pun intended) came in the food styling chapter and lighting chapters. I am really looking forward to getting some food photography done and in the books so I can offer this as a service of my business. BTW the images in the book are fantastic, so have a snack before reading.

I still have a few more of these left from my trip to Brookside Gardens. My back is still ailing, but I did get some referrals from parents at Michael's football game for Acupuncture. I think I am going to try that today. Speaking of Michaels game last night, he caught an interception on the other teams final drive to secure a win for his team.

Just Add Sushi

I was hoping to get some food shot today, but I pulled a muscle in my lower back and I am thinking I have a date with a bag of ice.

A neighbor that also a passion for photography. I took Erwan to Ace Photo last Friday to check out the store. He was looking for a good camera back pack for his Canon. BTW Ace has every bag you can think of in stock and out for you to try your gear in. The unfortunate side to this story is that the backpack is for his trip back to France. He is moving back to France with his family after about 3 years here in the States. I guess its the best excuse I will ever have to get to France. On the photography note, I made my first Canon purchase, a 77mm 500d close up lens. I also set up the studio to work on some food photography this week.

The Doctor

I snapped this with David's point and shoot last night. We were invited over for a left-over "Lets Drink" get together with the families. David has been a great friend and always is ready for a impromptu get "Lets Drink" together. He is neck deep in the restaurant industry in Washington DC and surrounding burbs and has a ton of talent in the kitchen at home and I thought he could share his wisdom on a blog of his own. That's is a beer and a post happening in the image above. You may recall Smelson's Crabcake. So if you like food and fun check out his new blog, Pleasures Of The Table.

Bubbles and Michael

A fantastic summer evening last night. Little BBQ, ice cream and hanging in the backyard making bubbles and playing Frisbee.

ALSO today is Geographic Composition day at Jason Moore Photography. The theme was "games".

Generated HDR in 1 file conversion and tone mapped in Photomatix. I added a little pop with Nik Viveza. I was tipped off to this sunflower feild by a local photographer blog friend Patty Hankins. Thanks Patty. There were acres of sunflowers at McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area. The bonus was that it was just down the street on River Rd.

Working it too hard

The weather gods were not with me on the cruise in Portland, Maine. I did a little ReDynaMix, Dfine, ColorEfex Pro on these. I like them a bit, but these are the edits you go back too a couple days later and go "What was I thinking". Better Luck next time. Heather, the lighting in yeterdays post was all available light. F3.5 @ 1/125th. Jen - I did the toning is CS3 BW adjustment layer, and used The Debigulator in OnOne Pro Phototools.

There is a ton of light pouring in this window for 10:30pm. I was shooting the 1943 and this couple was happy to pose for a shot.

Wednesday, July 2, 2008

I was out in Georgetown last night shooting for a client. What a perfect July night to do a nighttime photo walk there. I met Wolf, Travis and his girlfriend (pictured above) and we got to shooting around 11pm and shot until about 1am and then of course when your in DC at night with your camera, we had to ride over to the Jefferson memorial for a quick shot. Met a lot of new faces last night and for those of you I gave my card to, I will be posting the images from last night for a week, so come back and check. The two young couples I shot upstairs, email me your names please.
